GREETINGS FROM OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE
OMAHA, NEBRASKA – JUNE 15, 2016

I had the distinct honor of visiting the DPAA (Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency) forensic laboratory at Offutt AFB in Omaha thanks to Johnie Webb, DPAA Deputy Director. It is located in a hanger that was formerly used to assemble WWII bombers that were sent to Europe. Their lab is of the highest quality, an internationally accredited forensics facility.

My VIP tour began with Dr. Damann, Laboratory Director explaining to me, in great detail, the process and their responsibilities when the repatriated remains arrive at Offutt. He was most gracious in answering any questions I had. There were display cases in the lobby area showing various artifacts recovered and skeletal displays that he described which helped me better understand their process and procedures.

I entered the secure corridor with Dr. Damann for an overview of the different labs and equipment. Needless to say, it is very impressive. It is simply amazing how they are able to make identification on even the smallest of samples. The DNA process of sampling, testing, profiling, and reports was most interesting.

The extraordinary part of the visit was when I got to observe some of the anthropologists working with more than 300 remains of the USS Oklahoma. I was awestruck and reminded of the ultimate sacrifice these military personnel made for the freedom I enjoy. The effort, compassion, integrity, and respect that the DPAA staff demonstrates to honor our MIA’s was very apparent.

Dr. Damann provided me an update on The Hanson Crew – my Uncle Tom McGraw’s Crew:
MIA February 28, 1945 Adriatic Sea
Recovery of the Hanson Crew: October 2015
Dignified Transfer from Italy to Offut AFB November 4, 2015

The desalination process is complete – this conservation procedure started in the field during recovery and continued at the lab to preserve the remains in conditions that they were recovered.

Anthropologists have completed their initial layout of skeletal remains and nominated DNA sampling.

All DNA samples have been completed and sent to be tested which is being done now and they are awaiting results of their reports and then will continue the identification process.

This was an incredible experience that I will never forget – the BEST field trip…ever!
